It’s just a simple forest, in what could be considered an open plain. A single tree grows there. It reaches up to the sky, a giant oak that has seen better days. The bark has faded, and its wood resembles nothing more than a pile of charred ash now. But the wind is still strong here. It picks up leaves from the ground and carries them high. Even so, it’s a peaceful, quiet place—it wouldn’t do any harm to take a short rest and wait for the storm to pass.
And as if on cue, thunder rumbles through the heavens. It sounds angry but doesn’t come close to breaking through the clouds above. The rain continues to fall in a steady patter, but at least it’s not as heavy or unrelenting as before.
But despite the peace of the moment, I can’t shake the feeling of unease. There’s something not quite right about this place—a heaviness hanging over everything. It makes me feel uneasy even sitting still. Like I should run away, find someplace safer than where I am right now.
Maybe I’m being paranoid. Maybe this whole forest thing is just a result of being lost in the middle of nowhere on a journey. I don’t know for sure. All I know is that whatever else is going on, I definitely need to get out of here. As soon as possible.
Just then, my eyes flick down, landing on a small object by my feet. It looks old, probably around twenty years at the oldest, although I’ve only ever been told that it feels much older than that.
